A Smashing Good Cocktail

Recently while visiting DutchmansΒ Designs, a quaint little shopΒ on the Georgia coast, I picked up Porch Parties by Denise Gee, a fabulous book containingΒ cocktail recipes and easy ideas for outdoor entertaining.Β Right away, I wanted to tryΒ this Blackberry Smash. Made with my favorite fruit andΒ refreshing ingredients like mint leavesΒ and lemon juice,Β it’s definitely a keeper.

You’ll need aΒ cocktail shaker. Muddle 16 fresh blackberries and 10 fresh mint leaves. If you don’t have a fancy muddle tool, just use a wooden spoon. Add rye whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup and 1/2 cup of ginger ale. Then drop some ice cubes in and stir, don’t shake.

Pour into a tall cocktail glass and topΒ off with ginger ale to taste.Β Garnish with blackberries and fresh mint.Β It’s cold and fruity, the perfect complement to summer.

Here’s the recipe:
10 Fresh Mint Leaves
16 Fresh Blackberries
1/2 Cup Rye Whiskey
1 Tablespoon Fresh Lemon Juice
2 Tablespoons Simple Syrup
1/2 Cup Ginger Ale, plus more for topping off
Skewers of blackberries for garnish (optional)

Let me know if you try it!

Best Breakfast Buffet in Town

Sandcastle Cafe & GrillΒ
St. Simons Island, GeorgiaΒ

It was a sunny Saturday morning and 81 degrees when I strolled over to Sandcastle Cafe & Grill for breakfast in the St. Simons Island Village. By 9 a.m., many islanders and tourists had beat me there, already seated reading The Brunswick News, sipping on piping hot cups of coffee. Β I made my way through the crowd and happily opted for indoor seating in the A.C.

The cafeΒ opened in 1989 and has since fed many a hungry tourist and locals alike. With exposed brick throughout and an eclectic mix of decorations, the atmosphere is casual and the food comforting.

For just $8.50, you’ll get the “Glorious Breakfast Buffet” including just about any breakfast food you canΒ conjureΒ up. You’ll also receive unlimited pancakes, french toast and waffles. Or, feel free to order from the menu, where you can test your ticker with their signature Eggs Aorta–biscuits topped with gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage andΒ cheddar cheese.Β Saving room for lunch?Β Try the lighter fare–the Fruit Plate with fresh seasonal fruit andΒ homemade muffins.Β Check out the menu.

I got the breakfast buffet so I could pick and choose a few of my favorites–hash browns, fresh fruit, grits and sausage. The coffee mug was just the right size.

Guests help themselves to the wide array of buffet options. Sandcastle Cafe & Grill is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I don’t know of any other place on the island where you’ll get more for your money.

The fresh, cold fruit and orange juiceΒ are a welcomed relief from the summer sun.

Black and white images fill the long brick wall. Framed by the owner herself some 20 years ago,Β  the pictures depictΒ St. Simons Island in the 1950’s and localΒ families whose descendants still eat at Sandcastle Cafe & Grill today.

Located at the end of the strip mall in theΒ St. Simons Island Village, the cafe faces theΒ recently renovated Neptune Park and is just steps away from my favorite island feature…the pier.

After breakfast, or any meal for that matter, we always take a walk on the pier to see what the fishermen are catching, watch the shrimp boatsΒ or see if we can spot some dolphins swimming out in the ocean.

These are only some of the beautiful sights you might see on a visit to St. Simons. Pleasantly full from breakfast and feeling the sunshine on your skin, what a peaceful view.

New Restaurant A Hit for the Golden Isles

Island Chop House and Seafood Grill
St. Simons Island, Georgia

UPDATE 3/27/13 – Island Chop House and Seafood Grill Has Closed

ItΒ takes a lot of persuasion for my familyΒ to branch out and try a newΒ restaurant, especially in theΒ Golden Isles. We have ourΒ favorites, and you know how it is when you’re hungry–you want to go somewhere that’s guaranteed to be good, somewhere you know.Β On the Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend, we decided to take a chance on Island Chop House and Seafood Grill, a new St. SimonsΒ IslandΒ dining establishment that just opened this spring. The food was exceptional, the decor tasteful and I appreciated the fresh take on their inventive side dishes.

Call me a snob, but I typicallyΒ prefer to dine in stand-alone restaurants. Located on Frederica roadΒ smack dab next to the Cleaners, there it was. Though I hadn’t expectedΒ the restaurantΒ to be in a strip mall, it stood out among the other stores with an inviting exterior. Mom and dad waited in the car while I went in to scope out the scene. I came back with aΒ thumbs-up, having been impressed with the clean, sophisticated decor, friendly hostΒ andΒ desirable menu.

Upon greeting us, the hostess informed us that there’d be a 30 minute wait. It wasΒ 7:15 p.m. and we were hungry,Β so we weren’t thrilled about the news.Β  Then 10 minutes later, she led us to our table.Β There we sat andΒ waitedΒ until aΒ cheeryΒ fellow appeared from the kitchen with three tall glasses of cold water garnished with lemon wedges–a welcomed sight after a long day in the summer heat. Our waiter was as nice as could be and immediately apologized explaining that he was waiting on clean glasses, asΒ the restaurant had been so busy that night. There was a party of 20 at the table to our left and I could see he was right. He toldΒ us about the specials for theΒ evening, asked if we had any questions and took our drink and appetizer order.

We began with a classicΒ southern menu item: Fried Green Tomatoes. They were lightly fried Georgia green tomatoes layered with goat cheese combined with balsamic-tossed arugula. TheΒ presentation was reminiscent of an ice cream sundae. Stacked high, garnished with strawberries and drizzled withΒ what reminded me of chocolate syrup, the tomatoes were crispy and the balsamic dressing provided aΒ sweet tartness with the creamy goat cheese.

As I looked the menu over,Β  I narrowed my decision downΒ between the Smoked Gouda Shrimp & Grits and the Wild Coastal Shrimp. I chose the shrimp & grits for $18.95 with the mixed veggie medley: zucchini, carrots, onions and yellow squash. The dinnerΒ entreesΒ come with 2 sides, so I also got a caesarΒ salad. The grits were cheesy and hot, seasoned just right. The sausage was spicy and plump and the shrimp had a CajunΒ kick. Island Chop House and Seafood Grill offers the usual sides in addition to some pretty cool interpretations of basic carbs and vegetables with the volume turned up. Examples? Grilled Asparagus, Horseradish Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes, SautΓ©ed Mushrooms or Blue Crab Mac-N-Cheese. Mom got the Blue Crab Mac-N-Cheese and man alive, it was Some Kinda Good y’all. It’s fried and spicy!

Maybe to maximize space, the restaurant seating is mostly tables. There is one booth in the rear of the restaurant reserved for larger parties. The restaurant is open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. – Until, with Happy Hour from 3 – 6 p.m. daily. I predict it’ll soon be a local favorite and yet anotherΒ place my family visits to experience fine food on the beautifulΒ St. Simons Island.

The Crab Trap, A Family Favorite

The Crab Trap
St. Simons Island, GeorgiaΒ

When I consider my idea of a perfect 24 hours, I’m waking up on St. Simons Island, spending the day on East BeachΒ basking in the sunshine, finding sand dollars and conch shells andΒ getting lost in a good Pat Conroy or Mary Alice Monroe book, always anticipating where we’ll eat for dinner. No trip to the island would be complete without a visit to the landmark seafood restaurantΒ The Crab Trap.Β Complete with boating and rustic nautical decor, the atmosphere is always bustling. Enjoy a drink from the bar while you wait for your table and take a seat on the long bench under the southern ferns.

Located only a skip and a jump from the Atlantic ocean just passed a charming residential area on Ocean Boulevard, The Crab Trap has been one of my family’s favorite dining destinations for years. Who can resist fresh seafood and crunchyΒ hushpuppiesΒ along with cold cocktails after a day in the summer heat? Not I! This is my mom Debbie (right), and I soaking up the sun. We love getting our tan on, then washing the sand away and heading out on the town for some good seafood.

Crab legs are my absolute favorite seafood. Ordering them at The Crab Trap is only fitting. Would you look at the width of those things? That’s some serious crab meat. These will run you market price which is usually $20 – $25. Totally worth it. In the center of each table, there’s a convenient hole for discarding all those empty shells.

On my most recent visit, I ordered the soft shell blue crab dinner for $20.95.

Here’s what they would’ve looked like earlier in the day…I didn’t catch these blue crabs myself, but took this picture while strolling along the St. Simons Island Pier. Poor things, never had a chance.

The sun sets on a perfect day over theΒ F.J. Torras Causeway to St. Simons Island near the Golden Isles Marina.

Ringing in the New Year with Shrimp, Scallops and a Walk on the Pier

Iguanas Seafood Restaurant
St. Simons Island, Georgia

Though I’ve been going to St. Simons Island my entire life, I discovered Iguanas Seafood Restaurant just last year. If you’ve ever spent any time in the Golden Isles on the Georgia coast, you know there are many good places to dine, and my family has always had their favorites. Being the creatures of habit that we are, we typically always visit the same places. Last summer though, we tried somewhere new and I’m so glad we did.

With its colorful island-inspired walls, sail boat and fishing net decor and fun bar scene, Iguanas Seafood Restaurant is located in the heart of the village among all the great little shops near the St. Simons Island Pier. This year, we had New Year’s Eve dinner there. It was funny seeing the place decked out in Christmas lights and faux snow.

I ordered the shrimp and scallops dish, blackened, with grits. I don’t usually get scallops but I thought I’d give them a try. The shrimp was delicious, but I didn’t find the scallops to be that flavorful. Have you ever had scallops? I get the sense they must be like tofu in a way, taking on whatever flavor in which they’re cooked. The texture was spongy and just didn’t do much for me. Grits are the perfect accompaniment to shrimp any old time. The hushpuppies were crispy on the outside and succulent in the center, perfect for dipping in their house remoulade sauce (pictured left above).

My cousin Justin is a fan of my food blog, and when he saw me get out my camera to snap a shot of my dish, he excitedly offered his up and said, “Rebekah, wanna blog about this?” He ordered the special of the evening…soft shell crab with french fries. I’m pretty sure he cleaned his plate.

The great thing about eating dinner and shopping in the village is walking out on the newly renovated St. Simons Island Pier afterwards. I probably have at least one picture from each year of my life out on it, and I’ve often said it’s one of my favorite places on earth. I love to walk out to the end of it and watch the porpoises swim and see the shrimp boats in the distance. I’d like to be on one of those shrimp boats one day.

While out walking on the beach and at the pier, I met several folks from up North. One couple from Massachusetts and another group from Connecticut. They had each rented a condo for 3 months on the island to escape the cold weather in their hometowns. I don’t blame them!

This is the whole New Years crew, with our dogs, after breakfast the next morning. That’s me in the middle, on the far left between Brad and my cousin Justin, who’s holding my precious puppy Ewok. My good friend Patrick is next to him and the couple with the two labs–Constance and Justin, are great friends from college.

I couldn’t think of a better way to spend the first day of the New Year.
